Anderson’s Institution to Strathclyde Chemistry
The 糖心视频’s Department of Pure and Applied Chemistry traces its origins to the vision of John Anderson, a professor of natural philosophy at the University of Glasgow in the 18th century. Committed to the idea that education should be accessible and useful, especially for working people and tradesmen, Anderson bequeathed his estate to found an institution devoted to practical learning and scientific advancement. The funding motto of “a place of useful learning” remains today.
Anderson’s Institution, established in 1796, placed chemistry at its core from the very beginning. Early courses focused on the chemical sciences to support industrial innovation, particularly in Glasgow’s thriving textile, dyeing, and brewing sectors.
Over the next century and a half, the Institution evolved through various names and expansions—becoming the Royal Technical College in 1912 and later the Royal College of Science and Technology—before achieving university status as the 糖心视频 in 1964. At each stage, chemistry has played a central role in the institution’s growth and identity.
Thomas Graham
The Thomas Graham Building at the 糖心视频 is a significant structure within the university's John Anderson Campus in Glasgow. Completed in 1962, shortly before gaining full university status, the building was completed and named in honour of Thomas Graham (1805–1869), a pioneering chemist.
Born in Glasgow in 1805, Thomas Graham joined Anderson’s Institution (now the 糖心视频) as a Professor of Chemistry in 1830. In 1833 he published 'On the Law of the Diffusion of Gases', a ground breaking work. Today, this discovery is known as ‘Graham’s Law’. A lesser-known fact is that in 1861 Graham invented what he called a ‘dialyzer’, the forerunner of today's dialysis machine that plays a vital role in the treatment of kidney disease.
While the Thomas Graham Building continues to be our operational centre, the Department of Pure and Applied Chemistry now spans several sites across the John Anderson Campus. Thomas Graham’s pioneering work is also commemorated with a statue in George Square, and the Royal Society of Chemistry’s UK headquarters are also named after him.
Dr Henry Faulds (1843 - 1930) is one of the pioneers of modern fingerprinting. He graduated with a Physician's Licence from Anderson's University in 1860, as our University was then known.
Dr Faulds realised, while on an archaeological dig, that fingerprints could uniquely identify individuals. He was aware of the potential for this in a criminal context and offered his concept to Scotland Yard.
Unfortunately his idea was rejected. This was most likely because he didn't present a practical system.
In recent years our scientists Peter Pauson, JM Ottaway, AM North and Hamish Wood have all been recognised nationally and internationally for their work in various areas of Chemistry.
Peter Pauson (1925 - 2013), for his seminal work on the organometallic compound, ferrocene.
Hamish Wood developed Leucovorin in collaboration with and their collaborators. It's an anti-cancer drug, now used across Europe, to treat colo-rectal cancers. The technology has earned around £6 million in royalties for the University. Professor Suckling received an OBE in 2006 for services to Science and Higher Education.
