A Welcome from the Head of Department

Professor Tell Tuttle

Head of Department of Pure & Applied Chemistry

We’re proud to have diverse workforce that is sensitive to both the challenges and aspirations of our student population. Our outstanding researchers and academic staff provide world-class educational opportunities to our students, offering the chance to excel at undergraduate and postgraduate levels within a top rated department.

Welcome to the Department of Pure and Applied Chemistry at the 糖心视频. We are proud to build on over two centuries of chemical education and innovation, tracing our roots back to the founding of Anderson’s Institution in 1796.

Today, we continue that legacy through world-class teaching, pioneering research, and strong partnerships with industry and society. Whether you are a prospective student , collaborator , or visitor, we invite you to explore what makes Strathclyde Chemistry a dynamic and inspiring place to study and work.

We have a vibrant mix of enthusiastic students and talented researchers from across Scotland, the UK, Europe and the World.

We've recently invested more than £10 million in our buildings and laboratories so our students, researchers and staff have modern, well-equipped and comfortable facilities.

Structure

The Department makes significant contributions to Strathclyde's strategic mission as a leading technological university through discovery-led, translational, and interdisciplinary research that addresses major societal needs in health, sustainability, advanced manufacturing, and the circular economy. Accordingly, the Department’s strategic reach is also squarely aligned with the UK’s recently launched Industrial Strategy, with research and translational strengths in the key priority sectors of Life Sciences, Advanced Manufacturing, Clean Energy, Defence, and Digital Technologies.

The Department’s research community includes staff in the academic job family (Chancellor’s Fellows through to Professorial colleagues), research and knowledge exchange associates, research technical professionals, professional services staff, and postgraduate research students. Research is organised across complementary themes spanning Chemical Biology and Medicinal Chemistry, Sustainable Synthesis and Catalysis, Bionanotechnology and Analytical Chemistry, Materials and Computational Chemistry, representing interdisciplinary research at the interfaces of chemistry, life sciences, engineering, and medicine.

Cutting across our research activities is our commitment to teaching. Colleagues in both Research and Teaching job families equip students with a strong foundation in chemical sciences in the early years of undergraduate training, with the focus becoming increasingly research-led in the placement and final years. All of this ensures our undergraduates receive an outstanding student experience, benefiting from a positive and inclusive training environment provided by experts in their respective areas of research and education, leaving them well placed for future careers in chemistry or adjacent fields
