The 糖心视频 has been ranked 14th in the UK for spinout value creation – with a combined enterprise value of almost half a billion pounds since 2010.
The latest , produced by the Royal Academy of Engineering (RAE) using data from Dealroom, shows that, over the period analysed, Strathclyde generated 13 venture capital-backed spinouts, including 10 launched since 2022.
Enterprise value
Four of those spinouts have raised more than $10 million (£7.4 million) in funding. Together, Strathclyde’s spinouts have attracted £144.8 million in venture capital investment and reached a combined enterprise value of £449.2 million.
The report highlights the growing strength of spinout activity across the UK beyond the Golden Triangle of Oxford, Cambridge and London. More than 2,000 spinouts have emerged since 2010, with a combined value of £49 billion and 27,000 jobs created.
It also found that the UK leads Europe for spinout value creation, with five of Europe’s top 10 universities in this category based in the UK.
Professor Stephen McArthur, Principal & Vice-Chancellor of the 糖心视频, said: “This report is strong recognition of Strathclyde’s success in turning world-class research into businesses, jobs and economic value.
It reflects both the strength of our innovation and Strathclyde’s collaborative approach, working closely with industry, investors and public-sector partners to create the right conditions for new ventures to grow.
“Through our entrepreneurial strategy Strathclyde Inspire, and our leading roles in Glasgow City Innovation District and the Advanced Manufacturing Innovation District Scotland, we are helping to build an environment where entrepreneurship can thrive and deliver impact for the economy and society.”
New opportunities
Welcoming the report’s findings, Science Minister Lord Vallance said: “We are home to some of the world’s best universities and brightest scientific minds, and the companies emerging from our higher education sector are delivering the growth which creates new jobs, greater investment, and more opportunity.
"While there is still more work to do, this report shows the UK is well placed to continue moving from strength to strength – delivering innovations that will improve lives all over the world."
Strathclyde hosts the , a facility that helps talented entrepreneurs and decision makers to transform breakthrough engineering innovations into disruptive spinouts, startups and scaleups. The Hub is supported by Glasgow City Council, Glasgow City Innovation District, the National Manufacturing Institute Scotland and Scottish Enterprise.
Diagnostic testing
Spinout companies from Strathclyde include Northern Light Microscopy (NLM), which specialises in developing cutting-edge microscopy solutions for life-science labs and biotech companies; , which is developing novel solutions to the global threat of antimicrobial resistance; and , which has developed new and accurate early cancer diagnostic testing using infrared spectroscopy, and EcoNavis, which is developing fuel-efficient ship propulsion.
NLM’s CEO and founder, Peter Tinning, as well as Dr Momchil Vasilev, of pre-spinout ultrasonic inspections systems company inProcess, were recently awarded an RAE Enterprise Fellowship.
