Research Interests

My name is Emma Dunlop (she/her) and I am a Research Fellow in the Pharmacoepidemiology & Healthcare Research Group (PEHCR) in SIPBS, ÌÇÐÄÊÓƵ. I have been part of this group since 2010. My focus is mainly in qualitative research methods.Ìý

BACKGROUND

I graduated from the ÌÇÐÄÊÓƵ with an Honours degree in Psychology in 2009. I then briefly worked for NHS GG&C's Positive Mental Attitudes Mental Health Project as a support worker and also trained as a person-centred counsellor. I obtained my MPhil in 2024.Ìý

RESEARCH INTERESTS

My research is always multidisciplinary and collaborative, working with colleagues from the NHS, third sectors, Government, patients, industry and beyond. Currently my main area of focus is patient reported outcome measures (PROMs) in cancer, and how we can work with the NHS, Scottish Government, patients, the public and other key partners to begin to collect that data more routinely in Scotland. The ambition is to collect PROMs data and provide cancer medicines intelligence, which could help inform the treatment decisions that patients make with their clinicians and help support health services in delivering the right care to the right patient at the right time.

I also have an interest in digital health, having worked on exploring everything from mobile apps, to robotics in pharmacy. I have additional interest in seldom heard, underserved and vulnerable populations/clinical areas, including but not limited to: refugees, the prison population and those with experience of mental ill health. Finally, I am passionate about patient and public involvement (PPI) in research.

My current and most recent research Interests/projects conducted include:

  • Cancer Medicines Outcomes Programme (CMOP) (Phase 1 2016-2019, Phase 2 2020-2023, Interim phase 2023-2024, Phase 3 2024-2027): Scottish Government-funded programme in collaboration with NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde (NHS GG&C), now in partnership with Public Health Scotland (CMOP-PHS) my work involves exploring how we collect Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) as part of routine care. I am also co-chair of the Scottish Cancer PROMs Advisory Group, which reports to the Scottish Government (est. early 2021).Ìý
  • Exploration of stigma, professionalism and professional identity from the perspective of student and newly qualified pharmacists, in relation to treating patients with substance dependency (collaboration with Healthcare Improvement Scotland)
  • Exploring and testing of a pharmacotherapy outcomes framework, and understanding what tools can be used to assess quality if life of patients with chronic pain, in relation to delivering the new pharmacotherapy service in NHS Scotland (NHS Education for Scotland).Ìý

Previous projects include:Ìý

  • Evaluation of Automated Technology (EAT) in Community Pharmacy (2017 - 2018): Scottish Government Funded pilot evaluating the workforce, clinical and business outcomes of automation in community pharmacy.ÌýÌý
  • Macmillan Pharmacist Facilitator Project Greater Glasgow & Clyde (2010-2015) (WINNER of the 2015 Scottish Pharmacist Awards for Innovation & Change in Pharmacy Practice)
    • Conducting interviews with patients and carers on the palliative care they receive from community pharmacy. Involved with various other aspects of the project.
    • Evaluation (April-October 2014) Evaluating certain aspects of the existing service, with particular attention paid to community-based patient advice services among other elements.
    • Evaluation (November 2014-October 2015) Evaluating face to face and online-based palliative care training for community pharmacy counter staff
  • Macmillan Rural Palliative Care Pharmacist Practitioner Project (2012-2014)
    • Working in the Skye, Kyle & Lochalsh area, this project aims to establish the gaps and strengths of the end of life/palliative pharmacy-based services in this rural project area. Funded by Boots PLC, NHS Highland and MacmillanÌýÌý
  • NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde Pharmacy Re-design (2010-2016)
    • Conducting interviews and focus groups with pharmacy staff experiencing the largest pharmacy distribution re-design in the world. Worked in conjunction with Management Science in the Business School. Work spanned 2 phases.
  • SMC Evaluation Programme
    • Interviewing Clinical Experts on their engagement with the Scottish Medicines Consortium. Interviewing Finance and Pharmacy representatives from NHS Health Boards on their use of the Forward Look Horizon Scanning Report
