Research Interests

Dr Mitchell's research interests straddle critical approaches to human rights law, women鈥檚 rights, reproductive rights, and feminist legal theory. Her research explores how narratives of women are constructed in law. Her current focus is on the narratives around abortion law in Scotland.

She is involved in individual and collaborative projects that contribute to feminist understandings of women's rights in both domestic and international law. She is currently working on a number of projects that explore how reproductive rights are understood within human rights law.

She was the PI on a funded project 'Mainstreaming Women's Rights' that explored how human rights law is taught in law schools and looks specifically at whether content on reproductive rights is included. She was also awarded a SULI fellowship (2023-2024) for her research project 'Scotland's Abortion Law: Past Present and Future'.

She welcomes applications from perspective PhD candidates in the area of women鈥檚 rights, reproductive rights, international human rights law, critical approaches to human rights, gender, sexuality and the law, and feminist legal theory in general.
