Personal statement
My original background is in geology, with a particular emphasis on structural geology and tectonics. During my PhD, I adopted a more interdisciplinary approach, integrating geology and engineering. This path has equipped me with extensive expertise in fluid flow through fault and fracture networks, particularly for geo-energy applications, and their role in achieving net-zero.
As a committed educator at Strathclyde, I teach courses that emphasize the sustainable use of subsurface resources and subsurface engineering. These include Hydrogeology and Sustainable Management of Groundwater Resources (CL935), Groundwater Flow Modelling (CL951), and Soils & Water Engineering (EO107). I also teach the analysis of spatial problems in the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) module (CL961). This class has a strong focus on using GIS to address challenges in Civil and Environmental Engineering, such as using satellite imagery to monitor vegetation health and employing landscape visualization tools to conduct visual impact assessments as part of Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA).
I also have a keen interest in embedding data literacy in my teaching. In Numerical Tools (part of EO109), I emphasize responsible data usage and spreadsheet design to minimize errors; an essential skill given the high error rates in spreadsheet applications, which can lead to significant financial and operational risks. The Geographic Information Systems class focuses on practical, hands-on learning that enables students to employ GIS confidently in both academic and professional settings. My hydrogeology modules incorporate data analytics skills by embracing advanced Excel techniques and Python programming. Above all, I encourage students to use technology responsibly as tools for critical thinking and rigorous analysis.

- Groundwater is critical of importance to both consumers and businesses in Scotland, yet its largely invisible nature limits public awareness. This invisibility is especially challenging in today鈥檚 attention economy where 鈥榳hat looks good on photos and videos鈥� will determine prominence on social media. How can educators produce engaging content on something that can鈥檛 be seen? Real world examples are essential for outreach and teaching. To address this gap, we are developing a collaborative web-mapping tool designed to highlight locations where groundwater, or its surface effects, can be directly observed. The tool aims to support educators, students, and the wider public by making groundwater more visible, accessible, and relatable.

- Ensuring equality and diversity in higher education begins with assembling a diverse learning community. Graduate Apprenticeships were set up to create new pathways into engineering for people from different backgrounds. While the Graduate Apprenticeship in Civil Engineering (GA-CE) diversified the number of stakeholders involved in recruitment and our GA employers are also committed to providing learning opportunities for a wide spectrum of society, there is an apparent lack of diversity in our GA-CE programme, which reflects a wider sector issue in GA programmes. This project seeks to identify the key factors affecting recruitment to the GA and develop recommendations to increase diversity in recruitment of future GA cohorts. The student intern, will conduct interviews and focus groups with employers to characterise the recruitment experience from all angles and inform development of initiatives to improve diversity in future GA applicant pools.
