Personal statement

My original background is in geology, with a particular emphasis on structural geology and tectonics. During my PhD, I adopted a more interdisciplinary approach, integrating geology and engineering. This path has equipped me with extensive expertise in fluid flow through fault and fracture networks, particularly for geo-energy applications, and their role in achieving net-zero.

As a committed educator at Strathclyde, I teach courses that emphasize the sustainable use of subsurface resources and subsurface engineering. These include Hydrogeology and Sustainable Management of Groundwater Resources (CL935), Groundwater Flow Modelling (CL951), and Soils & Water Engineering (EO107). I also teach the analysis of spatial problems in the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) module (CL961). This class has a strong focus on using GIS to address challenges in Civil and Environmental Engineering, such as using satellite imagery to monitor vegetation health and employing landscape visualization tools to conduct visual impact assessments as part of Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA).

I also have a keen interest in embedding data literacy in my teaching. In Numerical Tools (part of EO109), I emphasize responsible data usage and spreadsheet design to minimize errors; an essential skill given the high error rates in spreadsheet applications, which can lead to significant financial and operational risks. The Geographic Information Systems class focuses on practical, hands-on learning that enables students to employ GIS confidently in both academic and professional settings. My hydrogeology modules incorporate data analytics skills by embracing advanced Excel techniques and Python programming. Above all, I encourage students to use technology responsibly as tools for critical thinking and rigorous analysis.
