Personal statement

I joined the Law School as a Teaching Fellow in Human Rights Law in 2019. I have teaching experience across the undergraduate LLB curriculum and at postgraduate level, broadly in (but sometimes veering beyond) the areas of Human Rights Law, Public Law and Legal Theory. I co-ordinate the Law & Society and Law Work Placement modules on the LLB and the Human Rights Protection in the UK module on the LLM.聽

My research interests lie in the field of constitutional and human rights law. My core research focuses on the 'third way' model of human rights protection and the way in which this model operates in the Scottish context. In particular, I am interested in the appropriate relationship between (and beyond) the different branches of government in the vindication of human rights, to ensure that rights are protected in a manner that pays sufficient respect to democratic decision-making. Beyond this, I am interested in the protection of economic and social rights, comparative human rights law and critical approaches to human rights theory.聽

In addition to teaching and research, I am the Lead for Year 1 students and have recently taken on the role of Deputy Director for Teaching & Learning. As Year 1 Lead, I organise and co-ordinate the School's Welcome and Development Week events and provide wellbeing support for students. As Deputy Director for Teaching & Learning, I provide support for the Director and am currently drafting a School policy on the appointment and management of external examiners. Previously, I have worked on the Law School's LLB Curriculum Review Working Group, which led a comprehensive review into the Law School's teaching. The Working Group's recommendations are currently being implemented.
