Personal statement

Dr Giesekam is a Chancellor's Fellow in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the 糖心视频. His research and consultancy focusses on climate change mitigation in industrial supply chains, with a particular emphasis on the UK construction industry. This includes work on the policy and practices required to deliver net zero carbon buildings and infrastructure and a more circular economy. See for recent news and ongoing projects.

Jannik primarily focuses on problem-oriented policy relevant research. He has undertaken work for the Department for Transport (DfT), Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), the Green Construction Board, the Climate Change Committee (CCC) and the Scottish Government. He is also the department's Deputy Director of Knowledge Exchange: Policy Engagement.

He has participated in >20 working, steering and expert advisory groups on embodied and whole life carbon assessment for organisations such as the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) and the Science Based Targets Initiative. He has contributed to widely used guidance documents produced by groups such as the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and the UK Green Building Council (UKGBC). He has also acted as an expert reviewer for a wide range of organisations such as the Ministry for Housing, Communities and Local Government, Chatham House, the Overseas Development Institute and the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE).

Jannik regularly presents to mixed audiences of academics, industrial practitioners and policy makers. This includes invited presentations at 7 government departments, the International Energy Agency (IEA), professional institutes (e.g. ICE, IStructE, CIOB), non-profits (e.g. CIRIA & ASBP), industry conferences (e.g. Ecobuild, Carbon Crunch, Volvo Construction Climate Challenge) and numerous other events - see for slides and recordings.

In addition to academic research, Jannik undertakes a small number of consultancy projects each year - past clients include Zero Waste Scotland, the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the UK Green Building Council (UKGBC) and the Rail Safety and Standards Board (RSSB).

Prior to joining Strathclyde in September 2021 Jannik spent a decade at the University of Leeds. During this time he was a Research Fellow in Industrial Climate Policy at the (2018-2021), a Research Fellow in Energy, Materials and Climate Policy at the (2015-2018) and completed a (2011-2016).

Teaching

Jannik teaches on topics related to climate change mitigation, life cycle assessment and the circular economy.

Jannik is the module leader for CL812 Carbon Assessment and Management in the Built Environment, CL988 Leading Issues In The Circular Economy & CL994 Circular Economy And Transformations Towards Sustainability.

Jannik supervises undergraduate and masters student dissertations and projects with industry on CL980 Dissertation Project, CL448 Individual Project & CL973 Independent Study In Collaboration With Industry.
