Personal statement

I am Senior Lecturer in Translation Studies, Programme Director for the MSc Applied Translation & Interpreting and MSc Applied Translation (at MEU) programmes, and Director of Knowledge Exchange for the Department of Humanities. I also contribute to French undergraduate teaching.聽

I previously held聽a British Academy Postdoctoral Fellowship at University of Edinburgh where I worked on a project entitled 鈥�鈥�, and I continue to be interested in questions around the transmission of memory via translation, and in working at the intersections between Translation Studies, 聽Holocaust Studies, Memory Studies and Museum Studies. A more recent Carnegie Trust Research Incentive Grant has allowed me to explore the role of translation and interpreting during the medical relief effort launched by the British liberators of Belsen in 1945, and I was also principle investigator in the '' research network, funded by the Royal Society of Edinburgh, that aimed to encourage and advance聽thinking around the translation of Scotland鈥檚 heritage sites across languages,聽cultures and peoples.聽I am also interested in the phenomenon of literary retranslation; my first monograph (Bloomsbury, 2014) examined the linguistic behaviour of and contextual influences on multiple English versions of works by Gustave Flaubert and George Sand. I am co-editor (with Anneleen Spiessens) of (Routledge, 2022) and co-editor (with Marion Winters and Ursula B枚ser) of (Bloomsbury, 2024).聽
