Personal statement
I completed both undergraduate and postgraduate studies at Strathclyde, and joined the University staff in 2007 as a Research Fellow. I subsequently worked as a Teaching Fellow / Senior Teaching Fellow, before switching to Senior Lecturer in 2025. I work within the Strathclyde Software Defined Radio (StrathSDR) research group, where I lead a small team of staff / PhD researchers, and engage in industry-facing projects.聽
Key areas I'm involved in are the hardware implementation of Digital Signal Processing (DSP) systems, primarily for wireless communications applications, and Software Defined Radio (SDR). I focus on Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs), System on Chip (SoC) devices and related technologies, and the design tools and methods that support them. Working in a field of direct relevance to industry really appeals to me.聽
In my teaching, I deliver classes on Hardware Description Language (HDL) design, Simulink-based design, and FPGAs, focusing on practical skills that will equip graduates for roles in industry. I also generate training materials for the wider academic community (and beyond), and I have co-authored several books on my areas of interest, the most recent of which is "Software Defined Radio with Zynq UltraScale+ RFSoC" (published 2023).聽

Teaching
I'm currently teaching:
- Introductory VHDL & FPGA Design (2nd/3rd year) - Students are introduced to the VHDL hardware description language, working with FPGA development boards, and the concept of a design flow.
- Further VHDL & FPGA Design (3rd/4th year) - Continuing from the Introductory class, further topics in VHDL, block-based FPGA design tools, System on Chip (SoC) embedded systems, and the PYNQ software/hardware framework.聽聽
- DSP and FPGA Based Embedded Systems Design (5th year / MSc) - I teach the FPGA-focused section of the class, covering the implementation of DSP systems on FPGAs, including arithmetic, filters, multirate operations, numerically controlled oscillators, the CORDIC technique, and some wireless communications context.聽
I also have experience teaching various aspects of digital logic, state machines, DSP theory, wireless communications theory and design, synchronisation, and other topics. I supervise 4th year, 5th year and MSc projects in these and related areas.聽聽
