Personal statement

My research interests are firmly in the area of entrepreneurial cognition and mindset as antecedents to individual and team-level behaviour. I draw on a number of established theories of psychology (positive psychology, competence development psychology, personal constructs psychology, decision-making psychology, identity, etc.) in order to explain entrepreneurial behaviour in different settings, including but not limited to business start-up.

More recently I have developed a strong interest in entrepreneurial mindset as set of competences that enable individuals to fulfil their potential and to add value at the organisational and societal level. This work rests on the assumption that entrepreneurial mindsets can be taught and learned through dedicated intervention (based on principles of psychoeducation).听

I also have a strong interest in neurodiversity in entrepreneurship, on how minds that are wired dirrerently add value, the role of neurotypical assumptions around entrepreneurial activity and how we can create a neuroinclusive entrepreneurial ecosystem.听

My current activities focus on the development of a series of teaching and research instruments for entrepreneurial mindset intervention to be applied through engaged scholarship in contexts such as leadership for inclusive and sustainable innovation.听

My research has been published in Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice,International Business Review, Entrepreneurship & Regional Development, Journal of Small Business Management and other leading entrepreneurship and internationalisation outlets. I am also the author of a series of research and evaluation reports for Scottish Enterprise and Scottish EDGE, which have have helped develop ecosystem support for both start ups and internationally growing firms.

Teaching

In my teaching, as am passionate about the area of entrepreneurial mindset. We all have a mindset - a way of thinking that underpins the way we act. However, our mindsets are not always entrepreneurial. We may not be particularly creative or positive. We may not feel comfortable acting when the outcomes of our actions are unclear or uncertain. We may be afraid to try, to fail or to be judged. The good news is that mindsets can shift! My ambition is to coach students to conquer their mindset, make them more entrepreneurial.听

My other teaching passion is internationalisation of small firms. Some new and small businesses have offerings that may be appealing worldwide. In my classes, students work hands-on on an international market entry plan for local and national businesses.听

SBS recognises the increasing need to ensure accessibility and inclusion within its teaching and learning activity, particularly with regard to neurodiversity. Neurodiversity refers to the different ways a person鈥檚 brain processes information and it is thus central to learning. Neurodivergent brains are found in autism, dyslexia, ADHD, and other forms of non-neurotypical information processing.

It is estimated that up to 20% of students may be neurodiverse, including those without a formal diagnosis. To date, however, limited evidence has been collated as to how SBS specific Teaching and Learning (T&L) activities can be made neuro-inclusive.

This project aims to:

1. Identify neurodivergent learning needs in the T&L activities specific to SBS Programmes;
2. Identify barriers to neurodivergent learning, including setting-specific barriers (part of the T&L activities of SBS) and process-specific barriers (timings, breaks, interactions required, etc.);
3. Provide 鈥渂est practice鈥 on context and processes involved in SBS Programme T&L activities (including the range of formats that learning materials should be made available in - e.g. visual, text, audio, etc. - to ALL students, regardless of formal diagnosis;
4. Provide 鈥渂est practice鈥 in relation to assessment formats and contents for neuro-inclusivity, regardless of formal diagnosis;
5. Raise awareness of the needs of neurodiverse students with the T&L Directors of all SBS departments, with a view for them to implement 鈥渂est practice鈥 in their respective departments.
