Shivangni is an international student from India, she鈥檚 currently studying towards her PhD in the Department of Chemical and Process Engineering, having previously gained her Master鈥檚 degree from the same department.
Why did you choose Strathclyde for your postgraduate research study?
In my master's project, I spent countless hours learning how to use different equipment and techniques to work with various samples. As I started analysing the data I collected, I realized something fascinating: the numbers I was looking at had the power to determine the success or failure of the Experiment I was assembling. This realization fascinated me and drew me deeper into the world of research.
I discovered that the University had a wide range of modules and very positive feedback on social media. It became apparent that it had excellent student-professor communication, quality education, and a positive university experience. Talking to former students confirmed this and helped me finalise my decision. It has been the perfect fit for my academic aspirations!
What鈥檚 the Strathclyde research community like?
Let me start by saying that everyone loves to help here. My professors offered invaluable guidance, mapping out solutions and gave me time to learn. The lab staff's support made working on my project a smooth journey, and my supervisor's hands-on assistance was invaluable. Additionally, the encouragement from senior peers and classmates enhanced my overall experience.
What are the Strathclyde facilities like?
There's an abundance of resources at your fingertips, including quiet, study rooms and collaborative group spaces. You'll also find access to excellent sports facilities, computer labs, and departmental labs. The library is outstanding, and there are seating stations equipped with large monitors for practice and learning. With access to university software, you have the freedom to go the extra mile in your studies. Ordering essentials like chemicals and materials is streamlined and convenient, through the Financial Management System. Plus, access to journals and scientific papers, aids in shaping your research.
Are you part of any groups or societies?
During my master's, I learned beginner French with the language society and climbed Ben Nevis with the mountaineering club. Now in my PhD, I'm one of the ambassadors for the department. I help to organise events and am proud to represent the university.
I also volunteer and work as a mentor at Really Small Science, where we do fun experiments with young people to promote a career in Chemical Engineering. I鈥檓 also looking forward to joining the PGR society soon!

What would you like to do after your PhD?
There are so many avenues that I can explore using the research and skills from my PhD. At the moment, I aspire to work in Electrochemical Engineering in the future.
